Gardening isn’t just about growing beautiful blooms or bumper crops—it’s about creating a thriving, balanced and productive ecosystem. One powerful, often-overlooked tool in the organic gardener’s toolbox is the dynamic accumulator. These plants can naturally improve soil fertility and structure while also offering benefits for local wildlife. In this post, we’ll explore what dynamic accumulators are. We will also discuss how they work and highlight five of the best choices for UK gardens.
What Are Dynamic Accumulator Plants?
Dynamic accumulators are plants that have deep or aggressive root systems capable of pulling up nutrients from the subsoil and storing them in their leaves and stems. When these parts decompose (either by cutting and dropping or through natural die-back), they release those nutrients into the topsoil, making them available for other plants.
Commonly accumulated nutrients include:
- Nitrogen (N)
- Phosphorus (P)
- Potassium (K)
- Calcium (Ca)
- Magnesium (Mg)
- Iron (Fe)
While scientific evidence on the full nutrient profiles of dynamic accumulators is still developing, decades of observation in permaculture and organic gardening suggest these plants play a valuable role in soil regeneration.
How Do They Work?

Dynamic accumulators typically have:
- Deep taproots or expansive root systems that reach into nutrient-rich subsoil layers
- Fast growth and dense foliage, ideal for mulching or composting
- The ability to capture and recycle nutrients that might otherwise be lost through leaching
When you cut the leaves or stems of these plants and leave them to compost in place (“chop and drop”), they release the stored nutrients back into the upper layers of the soil, where other shallow-rooted plants can access them.
Top 5 Dynamic Accumulator Plants for UK Gardens
All of the plants mentioned below provide so many functions in the garden that they each deserve their own blog. But, time is of the essence so for today here is a little summary of my top 5 dynamic accumulators.
Comfrey (Symphytum officinale is probably the best known dynamic accumulator. The deep roots bring up potassium, calcium, nitrogen to the surface which is why it is often used for making liquid fertilisers and mulching. I also add comfrey leaves to my compost piles for extra nutrient and a bit of a kick start.

Comfrey is absolutely loved by bees and bumblebees. There are a lot of different cultivars and hybrids but my favourite is tuberous creeping comfrey which flowers really early, at the same time as my fruit trees so it really helps with pollination. What I love is that it provides a brilliantly dense ground cover and saves me a lifetime of weeding.
Nettles (Urtica dioica) are one of the most nutritious plants you can eat and have a multitude of health benefits. To be honest, I’ve never actually planted nettles deliberately but I do always keep a clump in a corner of the garden because they’re so beneficial.

As well as enriching the soil with nitrogen, iron and calcium, Nettles superpower is as caterpillar food plant. It supports a diverse range of insect life, especially Red Admiral and Peacock butterflies.
Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) is a beautiful plant and has a host of medicinal benefits (which explains why it smells a bit like dettol!).
This is another excellent pollinator plant, supports predatory insects like ladybirds and hoverflies. Very useful to plant next to anything that might be prone to greenfly.
Nutrient wise yarrow brings potassium, phosphorus and copper to the soil, so great for hungry feeders like fruit and tomatoes.

Chicory (Cichorium intybus). I would guess that most of wouldn’t think of chicory as a dynamic accumulator, but if you’ve ever tried to dig it up then you’ll understand why it is! In fact you can pretty much declare any plant that is brutal to dig up to probably be dynamic accumulator due to the intensive root system.

Chicory is often grown as an annual salad plant with bitter leaves but I use it as a perennial. You can still pick the leaves but you also get the beautiful edible flowers that attract pollinators.
Chicory roots are mighty deep, improving soil structure. When the roots aren’t being harvested for making a coffee substitute, they bring potassium, phosphorous and calcium up to the topsoil and feed many soil aerating organisms
Dandelions (Taraxacum officinale) are an early season nutrient accumulator, bringing calcium, iron and potassium to the soil (and the table). They are hugely important for bees being the first food for bees in spring and they attract a wealth of other beneficial insects.
Dandelions have so many uses with the leaves and roots being edible, highly nutritious and with medicinal properties. However it probably won’t surprise you to know that my favourite use is for dandelion wine. And out of the kindness of my heart I thought I’d share a link to a dandelion wine recipe in case anyone else wants to try it.

Benefits of Dynamic Accumulators
Dynamic accumulators meet all three permaculture ethics of Earth Care, People Care and Fair Share as well as many of the principles (eg everything gardens, every element provides many functions, cycling of resources).
Earth Care: Dynamic accumulators provide great benefits to the soil by improving nutrient cycling, acting as a natural fertiliser and soil improver. The deep tap roots burrow their way through even the toughest soils, providing enhanced soil structure and aeration. Organic matter from the decomposed foliage feeds the worms, beetles and whole spectrum of other soil dwelling creatures and microbes. All of this goes to create more humus in the soil, improving water retention.
Fair Share: Many dynamic accumulators are also excellent pollinator plants, attracting bees, butterflies, and beneficial insects. They also provide shelter and forage for birds and small animals and can act as trap crops, drawing pests away from more delicate plants.
People Care: As you all know I am the worlds laziest gardener and if I can avoid a task then I will. With dynamic accumulators I don’t need to bother adding synthetic fertilisers or even making my own comfrey fertiliser. I plant the dynamic accumulators where they’re needed and leave (groan!) them to it! I have also been known to chop ‘n’ drop where I think some plants could benefit from a bit of extra nutrient. My soil structure gets improved so I don’t need to dig (which you know I’m totally against) and I don’t need to water as the system is self mulching and contains it’s own humus-based water reservoir.
